Open Cell Spray Foam

Open cell polyurethane insulation is a low density, non structural insulation material, spray applied to wall cavities, floor assemblies, ceiling assemblies and in roof/loft spaces.  Open cell insulation is a performance upgrade on more traditional types of insulation that leads to energy efficiency, improved comfort, a cleaner indoor environment and to significantly reduce noise transmission from external ingress of between walls, ceilings and floors.

 

Building envelopes with with increased insulation levels are becoming standard practice in modern building regulations.  Consumers are becoming increasingly involved in the selection of green building products to help mitigate and future-proof their dwellings against rising energy costs.  Open cell spray foam technology is a cost effective solution to improve the energy efficiency of a building.  The material expands to 120 times its initial volume and fills cavities of any shape or size to provide a continuous, air-tight, seamless, thermal barrier to minimize air leakage and intrusion.

Closed Cell Spray Foam

Closed-cell foam provides an inherent air barrier with low moisture vapour permeability, and excellent resistance to water. The density for closed-cell spray foam is approximately two pounds per cubic foot. The medium density foam provides sheer and racking strength to wall assemblies in building applications.

 

Closed-cell spray foam insulation systems, when properly installed, deliver energy savings of up to 45%. Small imperfections in the building envelope (holes, cracks, gaps) not properly sealed will eventually lead to poor building performance or worse, moisture accumulation, allergen/pathogen growth, and very possibly structural failure. The solid nature and sealing capability of closed-cell spray foam, inhibits moisture-driven elements. Two inches of closed-cell spray polyurethane foam insulation will minimize air infiltration, exfiltration, convection, conduction and control solar driven moisture in the building envelope.

Rockwool

Rockwool is a well known and popular insulation material and is commonly used for retro-fit solutions as well as new constructions.  Made from finely spun rock fibres, the wool texture has a reasonably low thermal conductivity, making it the perfect entry level solution for those looking to insulate their property.  ThermoProtect are able to install new Rockwool layers to the loft floor or top up existing fibre insulation with an additional layer.

 

Rockwool represents an investment that whilst cost effective, does not offer long term durability and will ultimately need to be topped up every 10-12 years to retain thermal performance.  Although it can be installed between roof rafters, Rockwool is best known as an insulation solution that is layered on the floor of the loft.  Homeowners should be aware that this can take up valuable storage space whilst creating a breeding ground for dust formation, pests, insects and rodents.  Rockwool is not an airtight product and is therefore not as effective as Closed or Open Cell Spray Foam Insulation.
